Michelle Finley: May’s Exciting Moments

May is full of wonderful moments and milestones for so many.  School will soon be out and many are graduating and moving on to new exciting chapters.  We will be officially finished with middle school at our house and we are pretty excited!  We also have Mother’s Day which is a chance to honor the women in your lives who mean the most! Also, don’t forget Derby Day coming up this Saturday!

I used to attend Derby Day in Atlanta back in my single days but it can also be a great family event.  A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to attend Derby Day in San Diego during a girl’s trip.  We had box seats right at the finish line and it was so fun to dress up, hang with best friends and bet on the races. (We each put in $1 or $2 so you don’t have to spend a lot to have a TON of fun)!

So maybe you are lucky enough to be in a suite at the real Kentucky Derby or you are “copping a squat” at your local derby or maybe you are throwing or attending a party, here are my must haves and recommendations for the perfect fashion!

Going all out, dress up, choose a great hat and heels.  Wedges are a great choice for more comfort but my secret weapon is carrying along the perfect flat flip flops that easily fit in or on your purse with the hook clip (see photos).  That clip can help you carry your keys, shoes and small camera.  You really should keep one on your purse always.  A blanket that rolls up and has a handle is so perfect.  Choosing a dress with pockets is a great idea as well because you have even more “storage” options.

My next option is actually what I wore in CA 2 years ago, a soft easy dress with lower heel sandals that will get you through the entire day no matter how much walking.  Or if you are attending a party or sitting on the lawn at your local derby you may opt for the comfort of shorts.  You may go as fancy as a fascinator, a large brim very decorated hat or a simple straw hat.  I found so many options at TJMaxx for under $15.  Whatever you decide to wear don’t forget sunscreen on your skin and lips and sunglasses!

For Mother’s Day my biggest advice is don’t skip out!  Maybe you are on a super tight budget and that’s ok.  A simple jewelry trey with the perfect sentiment from your child for under $5 with a homemade card is perfect.  With Mom’s it truly is the “thought” that counts, a lantern with her favorite scented candle, or maybe a wine glass or coffee mug that reminds her each day of a special message.  I love the wooden décor pieces (especially the one that says OMG my mother was right about everything).  This can sit on her desk and make her smile every day.

Maybe she likes to workout, I found a full outfit at TJMaxx for under $40.  Also, a unique idea is a gift that can continue to give all Summer, a rolling cooler with the perfect picnic supplies.  Fill it up and take her out to the park on May 14th and many days thereafter!  You can also do this with a beach bag, towel, sunscreen and a cover up and she’s pool ready all summer long.

I hope this helps you with some ideas for your MOM!
