Tribble Mill Park to get two new trails Tue, 20 Jun 2017 23:22:18 +0000 Two new paved trails are coming this year to Tribble Mill Park, after approval Tuesday by the Board of Commissioners. Low bidder Vertical Earth got the $539,551 construction contract.

A 10-foot wide concrete trail will lead from the Festival Field parking lot to the granite shoals on the east end of the 718-acre park. A 12-foot wide asphalt trail will go from the existing multi-use trail to the corner of Callie Still Road and New Hope Road where it will connect to a multi-use path the Gwinnett DOT is building along New Hope Road. Total length of both trails is about three-fourths of a mile.

The existing non-paved trail to the granite shoals is eroding and will be closed for remediation during construction of the new trails. The project also includes two directional kiosks and interpretive signage at the granite shoals.

A $100,000 Recreational Trails Program grant administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will partially fund the trails with the remainder coming from the 2014 SPLOST. Earlier this year, the park’s two playgrounds received almost a million dollars in upgrades funded by the 2009 SPLOST.

Tribble Mill Park, at 2125 Tribble Mill Parkway, features two lakes and is often used for 5K races and large community events. Last year the popular park hosted 112 private pavilion rentals, 31 race rentals, 31 group camping rentals and 18 meadow rentals.

Michelle Finley: Summer Trends and Father’s Day all wrapped up Fri, 16 Jun 2017 15:11:03 +0000 The official start of Summer is quickly approaching.  Vacations are in full swing and I’m loving this season of Summer trends.  I’m sharing a few of my favorites with you today.

First the off shoulder, cold shoulder and one shoulder trend.  I love how this look takes the focus off my mid and lower sections and pulls the eye up!  It’s not so skin revealing that it doesn’t work for all ages, unlike the mid-drift trends which I must leave behind.  This look gives you an opportunity to dress up your jeans or shorts and yet remain super comfortable and cool in the 80+ degrees we have coming for the next several months.  One of my favorite places to shop this look is locally at Southern Sisters Grayson and TJMaxx.

Another trend I’m loving are the big, bold earrings!  Especially with an off shoulder top.  This is virtually the only accessory you need to really vamp up your look.  Pull your hair up in a cool pony tail and show off those bold earrings and you’ll look completely put together with total ease!  Baublebar is one of my favorite places to go for this look.  Choose a bold pair with lots of colors and they will go with every outfit.  Easy packing for vacation when you can use the same accessories with multiple outfits.

My next favorite trend is the kimono.  I chose a grey color from DressUp so it could go with multiple outfits and even move easily into the fall with a long sleeve shirt or sweater.  This is a comfortable and light weight way to layer up in the hot summer months.  It adds instant color to an all white outfit and can be worn with jeans, shorts or over your favorite dress!

What two trends am I leaving behind, WAY behind?  High waisted jeans or jean shorts and high waisted 2 piece swimsuits.  Neither of these trends tend to be flattering unless you are one of those size 00.  I just find both these trends to accentuate all the problem areas.  Sometimes in this case, less is more!

Men are notoriously difficult to shop for, at least in my family.  My husband hates to shop and when I ask him what he would like his standard answer is, “I don’t need anything”!  So what in the world do we get these guys for Fathers Day?!

From the simplest of gifts I say we always go for a homemade card, especially if you have younger children.  They are treasures for life that can’t be duplicated!  Another way to make a treasure is to use PhotoAffections for a personalized gift with a photo of you and your children.  He can have a daily reminder in his office or home throughout the coming year.

Last year I took my son to the local Home Depot and they had a build it work shop.  Call around to see if your location is offering this fabulous opportunity.  My son built a grill caddy and we went to TJ Maxx and filled it full of goodies to make grilling easy and convenient.  This makes your child feel so accomplished and is certainly a treasure for their Father to use and adore!

If you want to go all out the best Fathers Day gift I ever bought was a GreenEgg!  This smoker style charcoal grill makes every meal dreamy!  It turned my man into THE cook!  So it’s truly the gift that keeps on giving.  These are available at your local Ace Hardware and they sell the tables and accessories to make it all complete.

A new pair of polarized sunglasses will also be a real treat.  The polarized version helps with glare so if they are a boater or fisherman they will certainly appreciate this feature.  My favorite brand is Maui Jimm but Costa’s and Raybans also offer polarized and can be found at Sunglass Hut.

You can find some great name brand fashion and also some fun games and popular colognes at your local TJ Maxx store as well.  They also get a lot of fashion forward, name brand watches for incredible deals in on a daily basis.

If you have a summer trend or great Fathers Day gift idea please feel free to leave a comment! Visit my blog for more outfit inspirations and follow along until next time!

Lightning strike leads to house fire on Ozora Church Road Fri, 16 Jun 2017 14:54:37 +0000 From the Gwinnett County Fire Department:

Firefighters responded at 7:24 p.m., to a neighbor report of a house fire in the 2700 block of Ozora Church Road, SE in (unincorporated) Lawrenceville.  The caller to 9-1-1 reported heavy smoke from the back of the house and a vehicle in the driveway.  There was no answer at the front door.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from the attic of a two-story, wood-frame house.  Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines and entered the home to battle the blaze and conduct a primary search.  Fire crews were forced to back-out and go defensive due to deteriorating conditions and flames breaking through the roof.  The bulk of the fire was knocked-down from the exterior before going back inside to complete extinguishment.  The blaze caused heavy damage to the structure.

The fire appears to be the result of a lightning strike during a strong thunderstorm that was moving through the area.  A Fire Investigator was requested to assist with confirming the origin and cause.

There was no one home at the time the fire erupted and no injuries were reported.  The occupants are out of town and spoke by telephone with the Incident Commander.

EQUIPMENT AT THE SCENE INCLUDED: 4-Engines, 1-Ladder Truck, 1-Squad, 1-Air & Light Unit, 1-Medic Unit, 2-Battalion Chiefs and 1-Fire Investigator

Might Grayson get its first “farmmunity”? Thu, 08 Jun 2017 19:54:06 +0000 Grayson already has a first-class Farmer’s Market, but might it soon get its first “farmmunity”?

That’s the dream of Justin Brady, a local resident who wants to bring a unique development to the 1200 block of Lakeview Road. Brady’s vision includes homes built around a farmable tract of land that would produce a variety of crops. Homeowners would share in the profits from sales of the bounty.

To read more about Brady and the process for bringing this development to life, you can read the Gwinnett Daily Post’s full story here.

Michelle Finley: May’s Exciting Moments Tue, 02 May 2017 19:46:12 +0000 May is full of wonderful moments and milestones for so many.  School will soon be out and many are graduating and moving on to new exciting chapters.  We will be officially finished with middle school at our house and we are pretty excited!  We also have Mother’s Day which is a chance to honor the women in your lives who mean the most! Also, don’t forget Derby Day coming up this Saturday!

I used to attend Derby Day in Atlanta back in my single days but it can also be a great family event.  A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to attend Derby Day in San Diego during a girl’s trip.  We had box seats right at the finish line and it was so fun to dress up, hang with best friends and bet on the races. (We each put in $1 or $2 so you don’t have to spend a lot to have a TON of fun)!

So maybe you are lucky enough to be in a suite at the real Kentucky Derby or you are “copping a squat” at your local derby or maybe you are throwing or attending a party, here are my must haves and recommendations for the perfect fashion!

Going all out, dress up, choose a great hat and heels.  Wedges are a great choice for more comfort but my secret weapon is carrying along the perfect flat flip flops that easily fit in or on your purse with the hook clip (see photos).  That clip can help you carry your keys, shoes and small camera.  You really should keep one on your purse always.  A blanket that rolls up and has a handle is so perfect.  Choosing a dress with pockets is a great idea as well because you have even more “storage” options.

My next option is actually what I wore in CA 2 years ago, a soft easy dress with lower heel sandals that will get you through the entire day no matter how much walking.  Or if you are attending a party or sitting on the lawn at your local derby you may opt for the comfort of shorts.  You may go as fancy as a fascinator, a large brim very decorated hat or a simple straw hat.  I found so many options at TJMaxx for under $15.  Whatever you decide to wear don’t forget sunscreen on your skin and lips and sunglasses!

For Mother’s Day my biggest advice is don’t skip out!  Maybe you are on a super tight budget and that’s ok.  A simple jewelry trey with the perfect sentiment from your child for under $5 with a homemade card is perfect.  With Mom’s it truly is the “thought” that counts, a lantern with her favorite scented candle, or maybe a wine glass or coffee mug that reminds her each day of a special message.  I love the wooden décor pieces (especially the one that says OMG my mother was right about everything).  This can sit on her desk and make her smile every day.

Maybe she likes to workout, I found a full outfit at TJMaxx for under $40.  Also, a unique idea is a gift that can continue to give all Summer, a rolling cooler with the perfect picnic supplies.  Fill it up and take her out to the park on May 14th and many days thereafter!  You can also do this with a beach bag, towel, sunscreen and a cover up and she’s pool ready all summer long.

I hope this helps you with some ideas for your MOM!

Michelle Finley: Easter Fashions and Jacket Magic Tue, 11 Apr 2017 20:30:10 +0000 Every year, at the beginning of Spring when everything is blooming and all seems new and full of life, I look forward to the celebration of Easter! God is so good! And this season is a great opportunity to coordinate that prized family photo. One of my favorite things about this is mixing those patterns! I have a family of 3 so it’s pretty simple: I choose my dress, and then I coordinate my boys around me.

I typically choose color for our family. I see a lot of people take the khaki and white beach pictures each year and for us as blondes it just seems to wash us out. You may also choose a different color for each family member with mom and dad’s outfits bringing it all together with a plaid or floral that encompasses all those colors. I’ve included several photos of my family through the years in green, yellow, orange, etc.

This year I chose purple because I already had this purple floral dress that I’ve rarely worn. Having my dress already is a big savings and a perfect opportunity to get my ever-growing teenager a new shirt and shorts. Since he only wants athletic wear 24/7 this is as dressed up as I can get him right now. Off I went to TJMaxx to scoop up this striped purple polo, and while there I found a nice windowpane style dress shirt for my husband that brought it all together.

So remember all the pattern choices you have, plaid, stripes, windowpane, floral, polka dots and solids.  Have fun mixing it up, choosing a bold color and getting that perfect family photo for Easter or your Summer beach trip. You can view my family’s choices in this gallery:

Now I want to share this exciting story about being inspired by exquisite while staying on a budget. I saw an army green style jacket on line and just fell in love. It had such detail added that made it really unique.  I immediately clicked on the site and was ready to order until I saw the price tag of $695. Wow! The wind was taken right out of my sails, as I am certainly not willing to pay that price for a jacket! But I just couldn’t let the idea of that jacket go, so I decided I could make a similar version myself.

I started googling “army green jacket” to see where I could find a good style, with quality for the best possible price. I found a great choice at Old Navy and it was $35 but of course it didn’t include any of the applique detailing. I couldn’t find the lace applique locally so I went on line to If you haven’t been it’s a great place to find just about anything. I ordered several different styles of black lace applique $15 and when it arrived I got busy pinning it on my jacket to create an entire new look.

Since I don’t sew very well I decided to take my jacket to my favorite alterations and they agreed to sew on all the applique for $20. Suddenly my old navy basic army green jacket had a whole new exquisite look for a total of $70. Floral and lace applique is in this season on jeans, jean jackets and sweatshirts. Why not take that old pair of jeans, add some floral applique for $15 instead of buying an entire new pair of jeans for $100?

Use your creative mind and you will have a unique and beautiful piece! Enjoy!
